Unhealthy Diet Increases Heart Risk in Obese Adolescents

Adolescents who are obese do not have enough fresh produce, dairy, or fiber in their diet and may be more likely than normal weight adolescents in the development of heart and other health problems, according to a new study.

This does not mean you do not feel well as young people, but that their diets are not good for long-term good health.
The researchers analyzed blood tests of 33 young obese between 11 and 19 and compared the results with those of 19 normal-weight young in the same age group.

Diet quality is considered poor in all study participants. The obese adolescents had about the same daily intake of calories, protein, grain, and lots of fat, but significantly fewer servings of dairy products, fruits and vegetables.

In the study, obesity was defined as body mass index (BMI) greater than 95 percent of children of the same age. Normal weight was defined as having a BMI below the 85th percentile.

In all young people to test, obese and normal weight children alike, quality is considered poor diet – low in fruits and vegetables, fiber and dairy products. Children of obese and normal weight reported in questionnaires that ate similar amounts of grains, protein, fat and total calories.

However, portions obese youth reported significantly fewer dairy products and fruit tended to lots less. Their diet also was lower in vitamin C, vitamin D, potassium and vitamin A, found in fortified dairy products and brightly colored fruits and vegetables.
Researchers say that doctors should pay more attention to what young patients are eating, because the quality of the diet was low in normal weight youth and those who were obese.
