What advice would you give to people who cannot or do not drink milk?

For those who are lactose intolerant, the choice is to use products with low lactose or lactose content are available on the market. These include hard cheeses and yogurt. In addition, there enzyme preparations can be added to milk to reduce lactose content. On the other hand calcium-fortified foods and beverages such as drinks or orange juice may provide calcium, but cannot provide the nutrients found in dairy products and milk.

Alternatives include calcium-fortified juices, cereals, breads, soy beverages, rice beverages, canned fish (sardines, salmon with bones), soybeans and other soy products (soy beverages, soy yogurt, tempeh) , some other dried beans and some green leafy vegetables (chard, turnips, etc).

What advice would you give to those who do not like milk?

This is simpler, it is possible to stimulate the consumption of many products are very rich, such as creams, ice cream etc. Here the range is wider and I recommend you research products available at stores in your area.

On one hand, new bone formation (bone formation), and simultaneously destroys old bone (bone resorption).

Osteoporosis appears to shatter the balance between them.

The disease primarily affects those over seventy years and women after menopause, because hormonal triggers this process, sometimes an accelerated loss of bone mass.

Diagnosis

Various radiology techniques can help diagnose osteoporosis by identifying loss of bone mass in their early stages and to act accordingly.

“For two years,” says Dr. Ramos’ have a tool for calculating risk of osteoporotic fracture, sponsored by WHO (FRAX TM), which includes twelve factors of risk and allows to approach the risk of fracture a particular patient in the coming years. ”

In Spain, osteoporosis affects nearly four out of ten women over fifty.

The prevalence soars to 60% in people over 80 years.

Unfortunately the efficacy of treatment is marred by weak same track, 50% of patients discontinued treatment during the first year.

Osteoporosis and Calcium

  Calcium is essential for a good warm preserve bone mass.

Milk and its derivatives have been considered unbeatable source of calcium intake.

However, the milk is not the only foods rich in this mineral.

Certain types of seafood and nuts, for example, than the calcium intake of milk or yogurt.

It should be noted also that calcium needs are not the same forever.

During growth and after menopause, these needs are higher and are recommended daily intake of 1000-1500 mg daily.

These amounts can be provided with food, but in real life few people get it through your diet, having to

Resorting to supplements added.

Supplementation with vitamin D associated with calcium, on the other hand, has proved an effective and inexpensive way to prevent fractures ua good way to prevent dificit vitamin D and calcium is to take vitamin and mineral supplement.

News on osteoporosis

  in recent years, the study and classification of osteoporosis has undergone a remarkable development, which has opened the door to the possibility of new treatments and research on formulas as hopeful as the finding of new bone forming molecules.

Fractures related to this disease are associated with increased mortality and impact in terms of mobility, social isolation, fear and sometimes to a great degree of dependence to lead an easier life.

Osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone density loss of normal bone properly calcified, but there is less amount of bone per unit volume: this explains that this lower resistance against injury or loading the consequent appearance of fractures.

Bones live

Bone is living tissue, which has a constant activity over a lifetime, something that clashes with the idea of eternal durability that people usually have in relation to these organs.

In this sense, says dr. Ramos, Nyssa hospital rheumatologist Sevilla aljarafe with over twenty years dedicated to the study and treatment of osteoporosis bone “dry” and their persistence over hundreds or even millions of years, we offer a false picture of what life is bone .

Fragile bones

mainly vertebral fractures, hip, wrist, shoulder, pelvis and ribs are the most obvious manifestation of osteoporosis.

However, negative consequences can go beyond.

Mortality from hip fracture is estimated at 20% after the first year, about half are due to complications of the fracture itself and the other half to the diseases that the patient had previously.

Moreover, approximately 40% of women who survive hip fractures, no walking back and become dependent “said Dr. Ramos.

   In this sense, it emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, a diagnosis that is complicated given the silent nature of the disease, not for nothing is known “silent epidemic”

Habits.

The age-especially after 70 years – and menopause are two of the most important risk factors against osteoporosis.

However, there are only “have been described as eighty” says Dr. Ramos physical inactivity, alcohol and snuff are some easily avoidable in order to reduce the impact of the disease and the risk of fractures.

In relation to alcohol consumption, says Dr. Ramos, “has been linked to osteoporosis when more than three units a day, although I would like to make clear that clear that a beer or a glass of red wine a day does not increase risk of osteoporosis. ”

Osteoporosis is a chronic and widespread disease that disrupts the formation of minerals to the bones become brittle, resulting in great pain and increased fractures. This problem increases significantly as the population ages. Arthritis, which involves inflammation of the joints, is another example. Thanks to advances in nanomedicine may develop potential cure or treatment (some already mentioned in a previous post). A therapy capable of increasing the quantity and activity of osteoblasts, bone forming cells, has opened a new door in the treatment of osteoporosis due to its physiological mechanism of action endorsed by several clinical trials.

Spain Osteoporosis affects one in four women over 65. The bone loss that characterizes this disease ends up causing fractures of low-energy trauma, resulting in pain and loss in quality of life. Osteoporotic bone regeneration is a coherent and physiological therapeutic strategy so far has not been used in any of the treatments available, with mechanisms of action focusing exclusively on curbing the bone degeneration.

Now, thanks to biotechnology and recombinant DNA techniques, has designed a molecule capable of stimulating bone-forming cells, osteoblasts, so that is done to restore lost bone mass. So far the available drugs inhibit the activity of bone-destroying cells, osteoclasts, the new molecule, teriparatide, inhibits not only destructive, it increases the activity and amount of the creators of bone.

Teriparatide is based on a fragment of human parathyroid hormone, which is involved in bone metabolism. The drug, indicated in severe osteoporosis, has just received approval in Spain, where the company distributes as Forsteo Lilly.

His marketing is preceded by the results obtained in clinical trials has demonstrated its ability to reduce fracture risk in subjects with severe bone loss. The journal The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of these trials in which teriparatide compared with placebo. The study included 1637 women and 437 men with severe osteoporosis who had suffered a previous fracture.

The results after two years of monitoring showed that treatment for 18 months with the drug reduced the risk of fracture by 65 percent and severe fracture by 90 percent, according to data discussed by Eduardo Collantes, head of Rheumatology Service, University Hospital Reina Sofia, Cordoba. But besides these objective results, participants reported an improvement in their quality of life and pain reduction.

The drug is indicated for severe osteoporosis, a disease that is not a simple bone loss, but represents a more evolutionary grade, according to Collantes. Manuel Munoz, an endocrinologist at the Hospital Universitario San Cecilio, Granada, explained that the administration is by subcutaneous injection daily through a pen like that used in diabetes.

The results of clinical trials with teriparatide are based on the effects of daily administration of the drug for 18 months. Once the treatment, patients retain the protective effect, but may require maintenance therapy with other families of drugs such as anti-resorptive, to prevent bone destruction, as commented Manuel Munoz, an endocrinologist at the Hospital San Cecilio, in Granada.

I know of Alice, a woman in her 70s, who suffered a fracture of a vertebra while carrying groceries. Although surprise you, this situation can occur in people with advanced osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, makes them fragile and lacking in structure. That’s when the risk of sudden and unexpected fractures increases. Osteoporosis can affect both men and women of any age but is more common in women after menopause, although in some cases, can begin in youth. However, the effects are not felt immediately, because osteoporosis is acting as a silent thief that becomes visible when faced with a painful fracture has been a long time weakening the bones.

If even the strong embrace of a loved one, or crouch in tying the shoe can cause a fracture if you have osteoporosis, how can we speak of exercising with this disease?

It seems a crazy idea, but possible. Believe it or not, doing exercise, rather than cause you more fractures may be the weapon you have to fight them, to strengthen your muscles for protecting your bones.

If before I knew you had osteoporosis and were doing exercise, and have gained ground. If not, it’s never too late to start out right. The key to exercise when suffering from osteoporosis, is finding a safe and fun activity that goes according to your general health and bone density. Before starting an exercise program, talk to your doctor. It is likely that he or she recommends you do a bone density test to assess in detail the status of your bones.

The three types of exercise are recommended for people with osteoporosis are:

1. Strengthening exercises: including use of light weights, machines, resistance bands or water exercises. As its name implies, this type of exercises are designed to strengthen your muscles and bones of your arms and your upper spine. The carefully stretching exercises your upper back muscles between your shoulders helps improve posture and prevent you put too much stress on the bones. They also help maintain bone density.

2. Low-impact aerobic exercises: These exercises are done standing with your bones supporting your weight. Some examples of these exercises are walking, dancing, aerobics, low impact, using the elliptical machine, climbing stairs or gardening practice. These exercises are designed for your legs, your hips and your lower spine. The water aerobics and swimming can be beneficial but do not provide the impact that your bones need to prevent the loss of minerals. However, in cases of extreme osteoporosis or fracture recovery, your doctor may recommend the.

3. Flexibility exercises or stretching: Ideal for maintaining balance and prevent muscle tears. Moreover, the more flexibility you have, the better your posture. When your joints are hard and inflexible, the abdominal and chest muscles pull you forward, giving a stooped posture. Stretching exercises should be done when your muscles are warm after having done another workout. You make them with care and slowly. Ask your doctor which stretching exercises are best for you.

And since every rule has its exceptions, these are exercises Not to do if you have osteoporosis:

* High-impact exercises such as jumping, running or jogging. When you have osteoporosis it is best to exercise at a pace slow and controlled movements. The running and jumping can cause fractures because it increases the compression on your back and your legs.
* Exercises such as squats, rowing machine on, or bend forward to touch your toes. These movements increase the pressure on your spine and increase the risk of fractures as a result. Practicing yoga or playing tennis and golf, it is not advisable.

If you do not know for sure if you have osteoporosis or how your osteoporosis, talk to your doctor. Be sure to maintain an active lifestyle can help prevent serious fractures and painful and even deprive you of your independence.

Drugs for osteoporosis may reduce by up to 40 percent the risk of breast cancer, according to a study by the Cancer Research Center Fred Hutchinson in Seattle (United States) that is published in the journal British Journal of Cancer.

The research found that women using bisphosphonate drugs for more than two years had nearly 40 percent lower risk compared with those not taking them.

New evidence against cancer

As explained Polly Newcomb, director of the study, “this large study provides new evidence that bisphosphonate use is associated with a significant reduction in risk of breast cancer.

The protective effect was observed only among women who were not obese. “Obese women may have elevated estrogen levels and therefore the underlying hormones could influence the ability of bisphosphonates to reduce the risk of breast cancer,” says Newcomb.

Is unknown how these drugs could prevent breast cancer but the research suggests that these drugs may affect cell function and be important in development and cell death, particularly in the death of tumor or premalignant disease.

Researchers have discovered that certain classes of bisphosphonates directly produce cell suicide (apoptosis), inhibit the formation of tumor blood supply (angiogenesis) and prevent the ability of tumor cells to bind to other cells.

The study involved nearly 6,000 women in Wisconsin (United States) between 20 and 29 years. Half of them had been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and half did not. The women were interviewed in relation to their bone health, their history of fractures, if they had received a diagnosis of osteoporosis and its use of bisphosphonates.

Risk Factors

The analysis took into account risk factors for breast cancer and history of the disease in first degree relatives, age at first birth, postmenopausal hormone intake and body mass index.

According to the authors conclude, since they were considered important confounders, the findings may reflect real benefits because of anti-tumor mechanisms of these drugs.

This disease is a serious public health problem, affecting one in three women and one in eight men after age 50.

Unlike other ailments “silent”, this results in high costs to the health sector since, according to data from the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health, in a year is $ 730 million required to meet the 36 thousand 500 fractures femur that occur as a result, coupled with a cost of 15 thousand dollars on average that are intended to restore the bones of each person.

Clearly, osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that causes high costs to the Health sector in Mexico and all caused by a lack of knowledge. Although, knowing her condition is the main tool that is who have osteoporosis, since according to the Ministry of Health, eight out of ten women who have the disease do not know.

The high rates recorded worldwide in the last ten years produced a huge concern, which led to the development of research to include alternative treatments and to incorporate preventive programs, whose purpose is “to raise awareness about precautions and risks.

In Mexico, 5.4 million women suffer from osteoporosis diagnosed, according to the Ministry of Health and INEGI, however the number may be much higher since it is known that osteoporosis is underdiagnosed in all countries of the world, so that awareness about the disease and the better availability of diagnostic methods for the next five years that number will increase so signicant (over one million 200 thousand new cases at least.

To enjoy a better quality of life … should avoid or prevent osteoporosis, a disease that causes your bones to become fragile as crystal. Follow the advice of the Hispanic Foundation of Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases:

1. Enjoy a varied diet. Rich in calcium and vitamin D throughout life, although you should increase to 1,500 mg per day (4 glasses of milk, 2 yoghurt or slice of cheese) the amount of calcium after menopause.
2. Get physical exercise regularly. Physical activity for only 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, increase bone mineral content.
3. Try to keep a healthy lifestyle. Avoid excessive alcohol and coffee, not smoke and take the sun gently to increase vitamin D.
4. Always be straight. Sit in a straight chair with feet on the floor with his back and neck straight. If you have to do heavy lifting without bending.
5. Do not resign yourself to back pain. The curvature of the back and pain are not exclusive consequences of aging. Osteoporosis is the main cause is in your hand and take care of preventing it.
6. Become a review. It is essential to try to prevent the first fracture. Bone mass should be evaluated postmenopausal women with risk factors or fracture Debub.
7. Act in time. Early diagnosis is key: with proper medical treatment can prevent 50-60% of new vertebral fractures.
8. Keep your home ordenda. If your bones are fragile you have to avoid objects which might pose a danger to the stability and set you well in every step to prevent falls.
9. Check with your doctor. There are different treatment options increasingly easy to administer, which can help you take care of your bones. Talk to your doctor about what is best for you.
10. Treatment continues. If you leave the treatment will not be protecting your bones for possible fractures. Remember that drugs that work are those who take. Doses more spread over time could take resultarte more comfortable and help you not to leave.

What is osteoporosis?
This word means porous bones is decreased bone mass (the amount of bone per unit volume). When it does, the bone becomes more fragile and can fracture more easily.

Consequences of Osteoporosis
The main consequence is the fracture that occurs primarily in: the vertebrae, wrist and neck of the femur.

Can it be prevented?
Yes, following these tips, which are the essence of the Ten Commandments just noted:

* Proper nutrition: Calcium is lost daily through urine, sweat … and, if calcium needs are greater than the supply of it will cause a loss of reserve constituted mainly by bone. To do this, children should consume 800 mg of calcium per day, 1000 mgr adults and pregnant women during lactation and menopause 1200 mgr.
* Exercise: Avoid immobilization and inactivity. We recommend continued mild exercise, like walking an hour a day outdoors and do the exercises recommended by your doctor.
* Desintometría: Indicated for women with risk factors after menopause, to know with certainty their bone mass. In some cases recurrence is indicated, not later than one year.

The bone turnover cycle takes 2 to 3 months. When you’re young, your body makes new bone before the old breaks and increasing bone mass. This reaches the summit around 30 years.
The strength of your bones depends on bone mass and density, and this, in turn, the amount of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals that compose it.

The decalcification process accelerates with age, about 0.3 to 0.5% per year and more, when not supplied enough vitamin D and calcium.

At menopause, when estrogen levels low, the softening is accelerated by 3% per year.
Around age 60, women have lost 35 to 50% of their bone mass.

The risk of developing osteoporosis depends on the amount of bone mass that you have achieved between 25 and 35 and the speed with which the miss later. Hence the importance of consuming calcium and vitamin D, essential for proper absorption of calcium and regular exercise helps keep your bones healthy and strong for much longer.

Risk Factors

* Sex
* Age
* Race
Family history
* Snuff
* Drugs
* Ill estrogen
* Low calcium intake
* Sedentary lifestyle
* Alcoholism
* Depression

For you are well

* Consume adequate doses of calcium, the average is 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily. A glass of milk gives you 300 milligrams of calcium. A pregnant woman should consume at least 1,500 milligrams.
* Exercise regularly to strengthen your bones. No matter what age you start, a daily brisk walk for 30 minutes is sufficient.
* Prevents snuff.
* Hormone replacement may help (See your doctor).
* Avoid alcohol.
* Reduce caffeine consumption.
* Maintain good posture.
* Use low and safe footwear (slip).

Osteoporosis has no symptoms, it does not hurt or cause any change in itself. However, the extreme fragility occur in bone, appear with great frequency bone fractures, which are what determine the symptoms in these patients. The most common fractures in osteoporosis in postmenopausal women are vertebral fractures, which produce very sharp pains in the back and condition the progressive appearance of deformities of the same, fundamentally progressive decrease in size by crushing vertebrae. This pain can give way to a more continuous dull pain produced by micro fractures, and often is the symptom leading to diagnosis. Osteoporosis of the elderly typically occurs in long bone fractures, especially in the wrist, and even more in the femur, being responsible for the typical hip fractures in the elderly.

How is it diagnosed? .

There are no changes in basic tests that allow diagnosis. Although accurate diagnosis is obtained through the study of bone biopsy in practice using various imaging techniques for diagnosis, which also are also useful for assessing disease progression and response to treatment. Most are nonspecific plain radiographs of affected bones, which show osteoporosis once it is already quite advanced.
